The future of Lisbon Agenda

2009 is a watershed year for the Lisbon Strategy. Not only is the policy agenda coming up for renewal in 2010, but Europe finds itself in its deepest recession since the 1930s. While there is consensus among Europe’s leaders that the Lisbon Strategy should be continued, there is a “reflection period” underway to devise strategies that ensure that the post-2010 process will have greater impact, more visibility and further reach.

The Lisbon Council is actively contributing to this reflection period, taking part in the last three Lisbon Coordinators meetings in Prague, Paris and Brussels and devoting The 2009 Growth and Jobs Summit to the future of the Lisbon Strategy. In two excellent presentations (see below) Žiga Turk, the secretary-general of the Reflection Group on the Future of Europe and Aart de Geus, deputy secretary-general of the Organisation for Economic Development and Co-Operation (OECD), showcased actionable ideas and forward-looking recommendations. In addition, Executive Director Ann Mettler published a policy brief entitled From Why to How: Reflections on the Lisbon Agenda post-2010 and an editorial in The Wall Street Journal Europe entitled “Obama’s Lisbon Agenda.”
